Abstract
(Background and Purpose) The COVID-19 pandemic has changed people’s working mode. Under the impact of the pandemic, new technologies and patterns such as small offices and home offices, online live-streaming, sharing platforms, and smart offices have been widely applied to work and are used in businesses in many industries. Following these influences, we examined the core values and significance of offline office space and the necessity for people to return to an offline office space at a time when online offices are prevailing in society. While the pandemic has had many negative effects on people’s work and life, it has also accelerated the evolution of office space design. What can be done to adapt office spaces to the post-pandemic era? What is the development direction of office space design in the face of the ever-changing possibilities of the future? This paper will address these questions. (Method) This study takes the historical development trend of office space in China as an entry point to study the classification of China's traditional office space. Then, the changes in the design layout of office space and the working modes in China since the outbreak of COVID-19 pandemic will be discussed. Focusing on southeast China, this paper will mainly study the trends of office space design in China through the analysis of office space design cases since 2020. With results collected from an online survey, this paper will explain the specific impact of the pandemic on people as regards their need for the improvement of office space. We conclude with a look at the development trends of office space in the future. (Results) Since the outbreak of COVID-19, office space design in China is no longer confined to traditional patterns, and that the design of interior spaces has become more resilient to adapt to the fluctuations brought by the pandemic. The design further demonstrates the attention paid to people's psychological health, physical health protection, and flexibility in the office space. In addition, the survey results reveal that people now have higher expectations for the development of smart office space, green design, and the resilience of functions in that space. (Conclusions) Based on literature research, case studies, and questionnaires, this paper aims to provide an inspiring theoretical foundation, design approach, and a reference for future office space design practice. In this ever-changing post-epidemic era, the new design will help people find solace in office space and will make office space design resilient during dynamic change.
