본 연구는 프랑수아 미테랑(François Mitterrand) 현상을 “정치팬덤(political fandom)”의 관점에서 분석하고, 이를 “감정정치(affective politics)”의 제도화 과정으로 해석한다. 미테랑의 리더십은 정책적 성과를 넘어 상징과 감정의 정치적 결합을 통해 대중의 감정적 동일시를 조직하였다. 본 연구는 미테랑 팬덤이 형성된 정치사회적 조건, 그의 상징정치가 감정적 결속을 구축한 방식, 그리고 감정정치가 프랑스 민주주의의 제도적 구조 속에서 지속·변형된 과정을 탐구한다. 이를 위해 “베버(Max Webber)의 카리스마적 권위”, “부르디외(Pierre Bourdieu)의 상징자본”, “젠킨스와 샌드보스(Henry Jenkins amd Cornel Sandvoss)의 팬덤이론”을 결합한 분석틀을 적용하였다. 연구 결과, 미테랑 현상은 감정의 생산–상징의 구축–참여의 제도화라는 세 단계로 구성된 감정정치의 전형적 사례로 드러났다. 이러한 분석은 감정이 정치의 부차적 요소가 아니라 “정치적 정당성과 참여를 매개하는 핵심 자원”임을 보여준다. 본 연구는 감정정치가 민주주의의 위기를 초래하기보다, 새로운 형태의 정치적 연대와 상징적 공동체를 창출할 수 있음을 시사한다.
Abstract
This study analyzes the political leadership of François Mitterrand through the lens of ‘political fandom’, aiming to reveal a new structure of legitimacy in modern political culture where emotion, symbolism, and participation intersect. The Mitterrand phenomenon is not merely a case of personal charisma or mass popularity, but rather an institutionalization of “emotional politics”, in which emotional trust and symbolic identification reconstruct political authority. The research integrates “Weber’s theory of charismatic authority”, “Bourdieu’s concept of symbolic capital”, and “Jenkins’s fandom theory” to examine how Mitterrand’s fandom operated through the formation of emotional legitimacy, the accumulation and conversion of symbolic capital, and the creation of participatory emotional communities. The findings demonstrate that emotion functions as a key resource of democratic legitimacy while simultaneously revealing the ambivalence of emotional politics—its capacity to both vitalize and distort democratic participation. Ultimately, Mitterrand’s political fandom exemplifies the institutionalization of emotional politics in contemporary European democracy, exposing both the potential and the limits of “emotional democracy”. By proposing an integrated analytical framework that connects emotional politics and participatory culture, this study contributes to a deeper understanding of how legitimacy.
