Abstract

An image served as an instrument of communication in primitive times, but played a reduced role after languages and letters appeared. However, it began to reappear as a camera was invented in the 19th century. All its past concepts and boundaries were destroyed with the development of radiophoto transmission by the use of a digital camera and satellite, the introduction of computer technology and the appearance of the image media such as television and video, which occurred in the 1980s. Now, it is produced anywhere around us and meets with us naturally. It has become part of our lives regardless of our intentions. Jean Baudrillard, a French typical post-structuralism scholar, diagnosed the society faced by us as 'society of hyper-reality'. He said that hyper-reality beginning from a groundless utopian viewpoint and going beyond the category not only became more powerful oppressing basic reality but was accepted as reality by the people, which was the phenomenon of 'simulation'. The development of mass media and the excessive informational production and supply through the Internet enabled the hyper-reality and information of 'society of simulation'. The overflowing images around us occupied most of information. They were made instruments as unilateral social messages beyond the level of past personal communication. Through a study on images, Gaston Bachelard paid attention to the fact that in special cases our imagination produced very similar images, which were expressed as ‘les complexes de culture', which mean not complexes in daily life but complexes on a cultural dimension. His examples showed that many works in Western art expressed only a nude woman and a swan. In such a case, a swan could be seen as directionally producing the image of the woman, which was seen as commonly expressed because it had the direction of imagination established unconsciously in the environment and culture in which he was educated brought up familiar with Greek and Roman mythology from his childhood. (he called it 'swan complex') However, man as a social animal cannot live alone and is naturally restricted and affected by the environment and culture where he has grown up, which should not be handled only as a negative element. It may be natural to multilaterally explore our or my thought and behavior pattern and further a creative artist's artistic ground or code because of the collective characteristic intrinsic to him. In fact, it is not easy for an artist to be objective and cool-headed toward his own work. For that reason, the desire for seeking the source of time induces him to wander without a buoy in no time. An artist makes an effort to express the identity of his ocreation makes him divert all his interests to his own inside, Increasing ambiguity with the lapse own work, and draws the meanings of humanistic theories to express the source of the work. However, from the viewpoint that identity stems not from what can be expressed but from awareness of a difference and the existing source of the work also does not come from a distant place, it is important for him to objectively analyze his own work. Semiotics is divided into the three domains such as syntactics, semantics and pragmatics. The first two domains are much dealt with mainly in linguistics, whereas the last as one analytic system is applied to all aspects of communication. Semiotics is about analyzing methods as a theoretical approach in which the semiotic system and semantic social production in communication are studied for all cultural processes. As R. Barthes mentioned, it may be only necessary, nothing perfect. But as he greatly contributed to heightening our understanding toward the world through a semiotic method of analyzing not only a language but the whole culture, I think, his method of analyzing a work may not be perfect but necessary and useful. From such a viewpoint, this study which aimed at analyzing a series of works in A Blue-Haired Woman from Roland Barthes' semiotic viewpoint tried to investigate the foundation of a semiotic theory through his book called「MYTHOLOGIES」and analyze the works from the objective perspective in a semiotically analyzing method. For that, it explored from the analyst's viewpoint about the semantic action according to his table Two Semiotic Systems in Myths the image of a work and the existing method of interpreting it that an intention of producing it is explained by establishing five discourses from the position of its producer(artist). As a result, the greatest features of the work A Blue-Haired Woman include the meaning of blue, the imaginary space suggested through Another World , reality and dream expressed as drawings, a dual code produced by a woman and a shadow cat and fairy-tale expression, which showed that they constructed the image and substance of overall work. I hope that making an in-depth investigation into the current work based on the substance analyzed through a semiotic viewpoint will motivate me to develop further in producing a new work in the future.
