Abstract

Chŏng Yul-sŏng 鄭律成, who was born in Korea, is recognized as one of the best Chinese composers and an excellent warrior of internation- alism. In his 40 years of music career in China, he composed about 360 musical pieces, such as “Chinese Liberation Army Song,” “Yŏnan Song,” “Chosŏn People's Army March,” and others. The confirmation of his birthplace is important not only for the study about him who has become an international figure but also for international concerns: tourists and high government officials want to pay a visit to his house. The research has been conducted comprehensively and comparatively, based upon official documents which could reflect the early years of his life in Korea such as the copy of his family registers, his school records and land registers and the interviews with his family, and seniors of Hadong 河東 Chŏng's family council. Through the research, it turned out that those places which had been assumed to be his birthplace, such as Yanglimdong 양림동 or Kŭmjŏngdong 금정동, Kwangju 光州 and Nungju 능주, Hwasun county 和順郡, South Chŏlla provine, didn't have enough evidences to be his birthplace, even though No. 79 Yanglimdong, Kwangju, has still been designated as his birthplace with a marking stone, and that No. 163 Pullodong 불로동, Kwangju (present No. 94 Pudongjŏng 부동정), Kwangju, should be claimed to be his real birthplace. This research was inspired by the viewpoint that history should always be on the right track. It's sincerely hoped that the endeavor made to find the real birthplace of Chŏng Yul-sŏng will be contributed to the study of him.
