Abstract
Scholars have long examined the role of ayfin" in Ezek 40-48. But their research has only focused on its literary meaning in the Hebrew Bible. In this study, I argue that Ezekiel’s usage ayfin" of in the new Temple is influenced by the Sumerian laments, especially the image of Ishme-Dagan, king of the Isin dynasty(1953-1935 BCE) in the Nippur lament. In the Nippur lament, Ishme-Dagan appears as a rebuilder for a restored temple. His responsibility for offerings plays an important role in the return of their patron deities. Likewise, Ezekiel emphasizes ayfin"’s responsibility for offerings in the new Temple, in which YHWH abides.
