본 논문은 1920~30년대 식민지 조선의 대중매체를 중심으로 남성 신체의 담론화 양상과, 그 효과로서 남성성의 형성을 분석하는 것을 목적으로 한다. 특히 본 논문은 대중매체를 통해 유통된 과학ㆍ의학 담론 내부에서 ‘성적 능력’이라는 정상성을 중심으로 남성성의 규범이 조직되는 양상과, 이 규범과 조선인 남성의 정체성이 맺는 관계에 주목한다. 1920~30년대 식민지 조선에서 음경으로 대표되는 남성의 성적 능력은 남성성의 척도로 간주되었다. 남성의 신체는 그의 생식 능력을 중심으로 정의되었으며, 남성의 성적 능력은 재생산 뿐만 아니라 공적 영역에 투여될 수 있는 에너지였다. 이러한 남성 신체의 생산성은 사회의 유지ㆍ존속을 위해 투여될 수 있는 자원이었으며, 이때 남성의 신체는 사회의 생물학적 토대를 직접적으로 구성하는 것으로 여겨진다. 1930년대 신문 의학 상담란에서 나타난 조선인 남성들의 욕망은 그들이 성적 능력, 생산성을 갖춘 신체를 자기 정체성의 규범으로 내면화하고 있음을 드러낸다. 한편 성적 능력에 대한 남성들의 욕망은 규범의 외부에 놓인 ‘성적 쾌락의 생산’으로 기울기도 했다. 여기에는 사회적 정체성으로서 자신의 남성 정체성을 보장해줄 국가가 존재하지 않는 식민 상황에서, 여성과의 관계를 통해 남성성을 확보하고자 한 목적이 존재했다.
Abstract
The purpose of this paper is to analysis the male body discourse and the formation of masculinity as the effect of that discourse focusing on the mass media of colonial Korea in 1920s and 30s. In particular, this paper focuses on the aspect that the norm of masculinity was organized around the normality of sexual ability in scientific and medical discourse, and the relations between this norm and the identity of Korean men. The sexual ability represented by penis was the measure of masculinity in colonial Korea in 1920s and 30s. Men’s reproductive ability defined what a male body is, men’s sexual ability is the energy that could be administered to the public space. Productivity of the male body is the resource of society, and the male body was considered to constitute a biological foundation of society directly. The desires of Korean men in the 1930s newspaper medical counseling section reveal that they internalized the body with sexual ability and productivity as the norm of their male identity. Meanwhile, men’s desire for sexual ability was also directed to the “production of sexual pleasure” that was not mentioned within the norm. This desire reflected the idea of securing masculinity through relationships with women under the condition that there is no country that could guarantee their male identity.
