嗅覚をあらわす形容詞の意味拡張について ―「かぐわしい」「芳しい」「香ばしい」の評価性の例から―

Abstract

The olfactory phrases can bring unsuspicious or dubious situation, even though the varieties of olfactory vocabularies are not so rich all over languages universally. The topic of this paper is the semantic extension of olfactory adjectives “kobashi”, ”kaguwashi”, ”kambashi” (redolent, fragrant, odoriferous, perfumed, scented and so on) in Japanese.　　 These words have evaluating function originally, however, these are used as negative meaning net slangs especially on internet today. This paper classifies these negative usages of olfactory adjectives into 3 patterns by using the metaphor of fire and smoke. Examination and studies of various tweets, this paper points the evaluate function of these 3 patterns: negative for person, negative for event, and absolute / positive for place and event. These relates each other gradually in layers from negative to positive. Just same as other popular-used metaphors like “enjo”(flame), “chinka”(extinguishment), these olfactory adjectives would gain the positions as evaluating phrases in near future.
