Koreans were embarrassed by the four-point joint statement signed by President Trump and Chairman Kim Jong Un on June 12 in Singapore. The statement omitted the anticipated North Korean pledge on the Complete, Verifiable, Irreversible Dismantlement (CVID) of its nuclear weapons. Trump’s revelation at the subsequent news conference of his ideas regarding US troop withdrawal from ROK and a possible re-set of the US-ROK military alliance, however, provided a much greater shock to the Korean people. Trump announced that he will now negotiate with Kim over the peace and security of the Korean Peninsula. This implies that the ROK has become an object of negotiations with North Korea, rather than a close US diplomatic partner. This will create irrevocable damage to the peace structure in Northeast Asia. It should be reconsidered. The US-ROK military alliance is the symbol of mutual trust between Americans and the Korean people. The Mutual Defense Treaty between the ROK and the US is the lynchpin of the regional security system in Northeast Asia. It should not be handled lightly by the US alone.
