Abstract

In 1974, Kurt Mendelssohn has questioned the probability of the building of three pyramids by a single ruler - Snefru, the first pharaoh of the Fourth Dynasty. After analyzing the building process of them - one at Meidum and the other two at Dashur - he ascertained that the building periods overlapped considerably. Building and maintenance of the pyramids, including their associated mortuary temples and other facilities was an enormous undertaking that required the cooperation of the entire country. Thus, owing to their immense size, the building of pyramids during the Old Kingdom period had to become an activity in its own right which demanded its own economic rules. In these regards Mendelssohn has concluded that “it was the pyramid and not the pharaoh that ruled Egypt” and new pyramids had to be erected, irrespective of whether a pharaoh was ready for burial or not. At the same level Zahi Hawas has declared that the pyramids were the national project of Egypt and that, “as much as the Egyptians built the pyramids, the pyramids also built Egypt”. We could find certain cases in pyramid buildings affirming the royal intentions for creating job opportunities and maintaining work forces by alterations of the building design. For instance, the Step Pyramid of Djoser at Saqqara had been completed through the result of four phases of design changes. Sekemkhet and Kaba also had enlarged their royal mortuary complex at least once. Huni had built five pyramids not as royal tombs but as ceremonial shrines. The most striking example is attested by the three pyramids of Snefru built at Meidum and Dashur. How could Snefru complete the three huge pyramids during 25 years of his reign. The reasonable answer lies in pharaonic intentions which planned to create jobs for ordinary people by maintaining work forces for a considerable period. Through the “Giza Plateau Mapping Project”, which has been launched since 1988, remains of settlements and tombs of the ordinary workers have been discovered. In this regard, it is concluded that Mendelssohn's hypothesis could finally have concrete evidences at least at the pyramid field of Giza Plateau.
