시험과 과제, 퀴즈의 방식으로 수행되는 평가를 통해서 교강사는 현재의 교육 과정을 진단하고, 피드백을 얻는다. 평가 방식에는 성취 평가와 능력 평가가 있는데, 성취 평가는 교과 과정을 성실하게 이수했는지의 여부를, 능력 평가는 학습자가 특정한 능력이 있는지의 여부를 측정한다. 시험이 주로 성취 평가에 초점을 맞춘 것이라면, 과제는 능력 평가에 주안점을 두기 때문에 선별 과정에서 파악하지 못한 학생의 능력과 기술을 살펴볼 수 있는 도구가 된다. 이 연구에서는 번역 실기 수업에서 제출한 과제를 근거로 번역 과정의 어려움을 분석하였다. 대상자의 개별 문제점을 기술적으로 분석한 정성 분석을 수행한 후에 그 결과를 종합하여 정량 분석을 시도하였다. 구체적인 분석 방식은 우선 각 텍스트 별로 조사 대상자가 밝힌 텍스트의 어려운 점을 기술하고, 그 기술 내용을 바탕으로 각각의 분류 범주를 만들었다. 그 결과 분류 범주는 적절한 등가 찾기와 관용어 해석의 문제, 문장 구문의 문제, 문맥파악, 자연스러운 번역의 문제 등으로 분류되었다. 과제의 제시문은 ‘해당 텍스트를 읽고 어려운 문장 5개 이상을 골라서 해석한 후 각각 문제점을 기록하고, 그 부분에 대한 번역 방식을 서술하시오’이며, 내용은 로알드 달(Roald Dhal)의 『마틸다』(Martilda)의 일부 텍스트이다. 분석 결과를 요약하면 학습자들은 완성된 번역문을 완성하는 문제보다는 원문 해석의 단계를 더 고심하고 있었다. 원문 해독의 문제에서는 적절한 등가 찾기와 문맥 파악이 학습자가 느끼는 어려움의 주요 요인으로 밝혀졌다. 이 분석 결과가 함축하고 있는 것은 교양과정의 번역 수업은 원문 해독의 단계를 더욱 강화해야 한다는 점이다. 이는 결국 외국어 교육의 문제로 귀결된다. 즉 번역 교육이 소통에 중점을 둔 외국어 학습에 중점을 두고, 그 평가 방식도 소통적 언어 교육의 원칙에 근거해야 한다. 이를 위해서는 원문과 번역문의 단순 비교에서 벗어나 거시적 맥락의 파악, 텍스트 배경의 사회문화적 지식, 텍스트 유형에 맞는 소통 방식을 반영해야 한다.
Abstract
The job of lecturer is to examine the academic progress of a class and to gain feedback through assessments such as examination, assignment, and quiz. Such assessment consists of attainment assessment and ability assessment. The former assesses whether learners take the course seriously and the latter investigates the academic ability of the learners. While the examination is focused on the assessment of attainment, the assignment is focused on judging ability assessment. Therefore assignment are a useful tool to figure out learners’ skill or latent capability. In this study, I have distinguished the difficulties faced during translation by analyzing the assignment of an undergraduate translation class. As for the specific method, firstly I described the translational difficulties which was pointed out by the subjects, and made categories for analysis based on it. The data are categorized into ‘finding appropriate equivalence’, ‘interpreting idioms’, ‘sentence parsing’ and ‘producing natural translation’. The assignment is to “Read the text and select more than five sentences which you think are difficult. Then describe how you translate these sentences and solve the problems”. The text is Matilda written by Roald Dahl. We describe each subject’s translational difficulties and problems, and perform a quantitative analysis with the data. In summary, the analysis showed that learners found it more difficult to understand the source text than to produce a natural target text. The main problems of the learners in understanding the source text were finding appropriate equivalence and catching the meaning of the word from the context. The implication of the study is that translation teaching in Korea should focus on communicative language teaching and adopt the relevant assessment measure considering the communication strategy. It is inevitable that the assessment model of translation study in Korea put priority on foreign language proficiency and adopt linguistic errors as the valuation basis. However lecturers should help learners grasp the meaning of the word from the context, understand the background knowledge, and produce the target text with communicating skill.
