Abstract

With a growing awareness of the detrimental effects of artificial environments on human health, there is increasing interest in enhancing indoor settings by integrating natural elements. University students, often immersed in extended indoor study sessions, require stress-reducing indoor spaces urgently. However, efforts to improve indoor green environments within educational institutions have been inadequate, and the scientific evidence supporting their benefits remains insufficient. This research was conducted with the primary objective of scrutinizing variations in cerebral activation responses associated with the presence or absence of indoor vegetation. A total of 21 male university students participated in the experiment, during which changes in prefrontal cortical blood flow (OXY-Hb) were measured using near-infrared spectroscopy (NIRS) while they engaged in a 3-minute resting period in different indoor environments. An analysis of specific subdivisions within the prefrontal cortex revealed a significant divergence in brain stress responses between the concrete-built indoors environment and the indoor setting enriched with greenery. The notable decrease in blood flow within the ventrolateral and orbitofrontal cortex regions may be associated with indoor green spaces' potential to act as restorative environments, enhancing emotional well-being and concentration. These findings provide evidence that incorporating indoor green elements in educational settings can be a viable approach to alleviate neuropsychological stress among university students. This study proposes the utilization of indoor greening as an environmental alternative to relieve mental stress in college students. Furthermore, we suggest the need for further research to closely analyze brain response characteristics, considering various indoor green design patterns and participant groups.
