Abstract

This study aimed to investigate the effects of key forest landscape components, including geographical resources, waterscape, forest resources, and cultural resources, as well as urban landscapes, on prefrontal cortex activation in adults. To this end, changes in oxyhemoglobin (Oxy-Hb) concentrations were measured using functional near-infrared spectroscopy (fNIRS) in 29 adults aged 20 to 40 years. The experiment took place in a standardized visual room. Forest images were selected from award-winning photos in the Korea National Park Photo Contest, while urban images reflected everyday scenes. Overall, Oxy-Hb activation in the PFC was significantly lower during exposure to forest landscapes compared to urban landscapes, supporting previous findings on the physiological calming effects of natural environments. In the DLPFC, geographical resources, waterscape, and forest resources showed higher activation than cultural resources and urban landscapes, suggesting possible links to cognitive engagement such as attention and working memory. In the VLPFC, waterscape showed the lowest activation, which may indicate stress reduction. Cultural resources also showed lower activation than forest resources. Notably, forest resources elicited the highest OxyHb levels, possibly reflecting involvement in cognitive and emotional regulation. These results suggest that different forest landscape types may influence prefrontal activation in distinct ways. The findings provide a basis for utilizing forest environments to support psychological and physiological well-being.
