There exists a great deal of interdependence between the changes of U.S. foreign relations and the studies of Puritanism. Puritanism has been an important element in understanding the nature and evolution of the foreign relations of the United States. Nevertheless, the impact of the foreign relations upon the studies of Puritanism has rarely been discussed. This paper deals with the evolution of the Puritan studies within the context of changing nature of U.S. foreign relations in the twentieth century, with the First and Second World Wars and the Vietnam War as central events affecting most to the Puritan studies. American experience of the First World War led to the revival of isolationism. Disillusion was so widespread that a handful of American scholars, later known as ‘Harvard School’ of intellectual history of Puritanism, began to seek the roots of American thoughts and minds from early American history, including New England Puritan society. WWII deepened the desire for seeking American identity. With the efforts and impacts of Perry Miller, the greatest scholar ever in the area of Puritanism, studies of New England Puritan society flourished. Miller believed that early Puritan society was a “organized task force” to be copied for post-war Americans who were anxious to find their model example in their history to lead the world after the end of the war. American experience with the Vietnam War also had an important impact upon the studies of Puritanism. With the appearance of the so-called “Vietnam Syndrome,” there appeared the revisionist interpretation of U.S. history, which brought a significant chance in areas of the Puritan studies. As the memory of Vietnam War diminished and the new trend of conservatism revived in the late 70s and 80s, however, there revived the conservative interpretation of Puritanism. This was a reflection of the mentality of the Americans who wanted to find a meaningful roots of intellectual legacies from early American history.
