Abstract

This This study presents an empirical and comparative analysis of the migration histories, generational shifts, social characteristics, and acculturation types of East Asian immigrant groups—Koreans, Chinese, and Japanese—in Paraguay. The research investigates a range of sociological variables, including migration motivations, generational distribution, occupational patterns, settlement types, religious affiliations, and educational backgrounds. In addition, Berry’s acculturation theory and the East Asian Acculturation Measure (EAAM) are applied to identify predominant acculturation strategies—assimilation, integration, separation, and marginalization—within each group. Findings reveal that all three communities exhibit high levels of both integration and separation, with Japanese immigrants showing slightly higher tendencies toward assimilation and integration, while Korean and Chinese immigrants prominently display bicultural strategies that combine integration with cultural separation. Generational transition is accompanied by increased local adaptation, bilingual proficiency, multicultural marriages, and a growing sense of bicultural or hybrid identity, especially among the second and third generations. Distinct patterns and commonalities are observed in areas such as religious affiliation, language maintenance, community networks, and occupational mobility. By elucidating the adaptation and integration strategies of East Asian immigrants in Paraguay’s multicultural society, this study provides meaningful policy implications for multicultural integration, generational change, and community support. Furthermore, it contributes to the broader field of Asian diaspora studies in Latin America, offering empirical evidence for future comparative migration research.
