다문화 청소년의 이중문화 수용태도와 학교생활 적응: 문화변용 전략으로서의 이중문화주의

본 연구는 최신 자료인 ‘다문화청소년패널조사 2기(MAPS-2)’ 자료가 제공하는 ‘이중문화 수용태도 척도’를 이용하여 다문화 청소년의 문화변용 전략을 유형화하고, 서로 다른 문화변용 전략에 따라 그들의 학교생활 적응은 어떠한 차이가 있는지를 분석하였다. 먼저 한국문화 수용태도와 어머니 나라의 문화 수용태도를 각각 Berry가 제시한 지배문화의 습득과 유산문화의 보존이라는 두 개의 연속체에 대입하고 중심경향치인 평균과 중앙값, 그리고 군집분석을 통해 얻은 기준점을 적용하여 통합, 동화, 분리, 주변화라는 네 가지 문화변용의 유형을 구성한 결과, 문화변용 이론이 동화주의 기조를 바탕으로 하는 한국 사회의 맥락에서는 그대로 적용되지 않을 수 있음을 시사하였다. 학교적응을 종속변수로 한 분산분석 결과에서는 세 가지 분류방식 모두 ‘통합’이 가장 긍정적인 유형이고 ‘주변화’가 가장 부정적인 유형으로 나타났고, ‘분리’에 비해서는 ‘동화’의 학교적응 점수의 평균이 높으며, ‘분리’는 때때로 ‘주변화’와 유사한 부정적인 결과를 초래할 수도 있음이 드러났다. 본 연구는 이러한 결과를 다문화 청소년들의 유산문화 유지를 어렵게 하는 과도한 동화주의의 결과로 해석하며 ‘통합’을 문화변용 전략의 목표로 하는 ‘다문화주의’ 정책을 제안한다.
Abstract
This research employs the Bicultural Acceptance Attitudes Scale, utilizing the most recent data from the second wave of the Multicultural Adolescent Panel Study (MAPS-2), to classify the acculturation strategies of multicultural adolescents in Korea. Additionally, the study explores how school adjustment differs based on these identified acculturation strategies. First, the mean, the median, and the cutoff values derived from cluster analysis were respectively applied to categorize the four acculturation strategies according to Berry's acculturation theory. The findings from the three classification methods indicate that Berry's theory may not be fully applicable in the context of Korean society, where assimilationism is dominant. The ANOVA results, with school adjustment as the dependent variable, revealed that the 'integration' strategy yielded the best outcomes, while the 'marginalization' strategy resulted in the least favorable consequences. Additionally, the average school adjustment scores for the 'assimilation' group were higher than those for the 'segregation' group. Moreover, 'segregation' sometimes led to similarly poor results as 'marginalization'. These results imply that the strong assimilationist tendencies in Korean society create difficulties for multicultural youth in preserving their cultural heritage. Therefore, we recommend adopting a 'multiculturalism' approach that emphasizes 'integration' as a key principle for relevant policies.
