Abstract

This study explores how Korean-Chinese migrant youth experience precarity and practice permanent temporariness by using their ethnicity and in-between positionalities. They face precarious working conditions due to their age, migrant status and negative discourse on China. Before reaching adulthood, they aim to achieve longterm residency in Korea and practice permanent temporariness as transnational actors through visa changes. This study focuses on how Korean-Chinese migrant youth actively use their legal status as ethnic Korean youth. As a result, it captures how these migrant youth use permanent temporariness–previously used in existing studies to highlight the vulnerability of migrants–as a resource to enhance their future socio-economic status. Furthermore, by analysing their migration plans to China not from the perspective of return migration but as stepwise migration, this study emphasises the need to examine the process of improving their socio-economic status throughout the entire migration process.
