질적 연구의 이해를 돕다: 연구를 경험하는 초보 연구자들에게 있어 ‘질적 연구’의 의미

본 연구에서는 한국의 교원 양성 대학교의 초등과학교육 전공 대학원생들인 연구 참여자들의 이야기를 통해 그들의 질적 연구 경험에 대해 내러티브 탐구 방법으로 연구하였다. 4명의 연구 참여자들은 한 학기 동안 ‘초등과학연구방법론’ 강의를 수강하며 질적 연구를 수행하였다. 자료는 참여 관찰 기록 15주, 면담 각 4회, 과제 각 5종, 연구 일지 및 일상 기록 1종의 총 네 가지 방법으로 수집하였다. 연구방법론을 수강하면서 연구 참여자들이 질적 연구에 대해 이해한 것과 그 경험의 의미를 서술하면 다음과 같다. 첫째, 연구방법론을 수강하는 초기에는 ‘연구’에 대해 익숙하지 않음에서 오는 이해의 곤란함을 겪었다. 둘째, 질적 연구 실습 과정을 통해 연구 참여자들은 질적 연구의 어려움과 특성을 파악하는 계기가 되었다. 셋째, 질적 연구를 진행하고 논문을 작성해가는 과정에서 질적 연구의 의미와 목적을 차츰 이해해가기 시작했다. 넷째, 진행한 질적 연구의 결과를 발표하고 다른 연구 참여자들의 연구결과를 들으면서 질적 연구가 자신들의 삶과 연결되어 있으며, 다른 사람의 삶을 공감하기 위한 연구라는 것을 깨닫게 되었다. 본 연구는 많은 연구자 및 교사들에게 질적 연구에 대한 폭넓은 이해를 도울 수 있는 실제적 경험 제공의 중요성을 드러낸다. 이 실제적 경험은 이들이 학생 및 교육에 대해 새로운 관점을 갖는 계기를 마련해 줄 것이다.
Abstract
In this study, the stories of qualitative research experiences of graduate students who are studying elementary science education at a teacher education university in Korea was studied as a narrative inquiry method. The 4 participants of this study were in a lecture called 'Elementary Science Research Methodology' when the data was collected. During the semester, each of the four study participants conducted qualitative research, and the data for this study were also collected while they were in their research journey. The data were collected in four ways: 15 weeks of participatory observation records, 4 interviews each, 5 tasks each, and 1 research journal and daily record. The following is a description of what the research participants perceived about qualitative research and the meaning of their experiences while taking the research. First, in the early days of taking research methodology, there was a difficulty in understanding due to their unfamiliarity with 'research'. Second, the process of conducting qualitative research served as an opportunity for the research participants to grasp the difficulties and characteristics of qualitative research. Third, in the process of conducting qualitative research and writing papers, the meaning and purpose of qualitative research began to be gradually obtained. Fourth, while presenting the results of the qualitative research outcomes and listening to the research results of other research participants’, the participants of this study could realize that qualitative research is connected to their lives and is a study to empathize with the lives of others. This study represents that it is necessary to provide the actual research conducting experience to many researchers and teachers to assist them to understand qualitative research widely. It would be a chance to provide an opportunity to have a new perspective on students and education.
