Abstract

This study explores the concept of the people as historical agents in Park Eun-sik’s thought and examines its significance. The society in which Park Eun-sik lived underwent drastic political upheavals both do mestically and internationally, facing a grave national crisis due to for eign invasions by Western powers and Japanese imperialism. In response to the loss of national sovereignty, Park Eun-sik pursued an intellectual transformation. He critically reassessed Neo-Confucianism-centered tra ditional Confucianism and sought to address the modernization of Joseon through a Confucian framework grounded in Yangmingism. Through this process, Park Eun-sik transitioned from a premodern system of thought to a modern one, presenting a new perspective on the people. In particular, he interpreted “innate knowledge (良知, yang ji),” a core concept of Yangmingism, through the principle of “no dis tinction between the sage and the ignorant (聖愚無間, seongumu-gan).” He further established the notion of “true self (眞我, jina)” as the realiza tion of innate knowledge. Emphasizing moral equality, he underscored the role and significance of the people in shaping a new era of equality. In this way, Park not only critiqued traditional Confucianism but also moved beyond viewing the people merely as objects of enlightenment. Instead, he recognized them as autonomous, equal, and free agents of history. He mobilized the people to actively engage in the struggle for independence, the restoration of national sovereignty, and the advance ment of a universal human society. Moreover, the people whom Park Eun-sik identified as the agents of history were not confined to a specific nation or ethnicity but embodied a sense of solidarity that extended to a broader, universal humanitarian perspective. This concept remains relevant today, prompting us, as ben eficiaries of democratic ideals, to reflect on our own roles as historical subjects.
