Abstract
This qualitative study sought to explore general education teachers’ difficulties and needs for support in implementing inclusion of young children with special needs in private kindergartens. 10 general early childhood education teachers who were implementing inclusive education in their own classrooms in Seoul and Gyeong-Gi providence were invited to participate in this study, and data were collected through in-depth interviews. The overall findings of this study are as follows. Major difficulties which the teachers were facing were (1) the lack of teacher preparation and confidence on inclusion, (2) the absence of support systems for private kindergartens and teachers, (3) the difficulty on classroom management and intervention, and (4) the difficulty in collaborating with parents and special education teachers (and other specialists). To address these difficulties, the teachers longed for (1) disposing another qualified early childhood teacher for the inclusive classrooms or reducing the number of young children in the classrooms, (2) reinforcing practical teacher training (both pre-service and in-service) and support for teachers, (3) providing a yardstick of disabilities for teachers and developing a reliable diagnosis system for early intervention, (4) developing a collaboration system with special education teachers and specialists, and (5) building a family support system for the families of young children with special needs. Implications of the results were discussed in terms of the necessity for national-level support for successful inclusion in private kindergartens.
