1790년에 내려진 ‘조상 제사 금령’사건은 단순히 우상숭배 금지를 위한 결정만이 아니었다. 그것은 그때까지 중국에서 시도되어 왔던 예수회 선교사들 적응주의적 선교방법에 대한 부정이자, 새로운 통합적 세계관을 만드는 시도를 거부한 사건이며 나아가서 ‘유럽중심주의적 사고방식’을 선교지역에 일방적으로 이식하고자 하는 사건이었다. 본 논문은 이러한 의미를 부각시키기 위하여 마테오 리치가 이루어놓은 적응주의적 선교 방식이 어떠한 것인지를 고찰하였다. 이 논문의 방법론은 먼저 역사적 차원에서 고찰하고 그 다음에 신학적 차원에서 고찰하여 결론에서 체계적으로 숙고하고 그의 업적에 대한 평가를 내리는 것이다. 마테오 리치의 적응주의적 선교 방법에는 신론적ㆍ창조론적ㆍ인간학적 숙고가 있었으며, 무엇보다도 마테오 리치의 적응주의에는 이냐시오 로욜라의 영성이 배후에 있었다고 사료된다. ‘조상 제사 금령’사건은 따라서 이러한 영성적 작업과 더불어 쌍방 통교의 개방적 선교 방법을 거부하고 일방적 선교 방법론을 확고히 한 사건이라고 평가된다.
Abstract
The decree of 1790 prohibiting ancestral sacrifices, which was issued by Bishop Gouvea from Peking, was not simply a prohibition against idolatry. It amounted to a rejection of the accommodative attempts of the Jesuit Missionaries in China, who had been working until that time to forge a new, integrated world view in missionary activity. The decree was a decision to transplant unilaterally the eurocentric way of thinking in mission areas. This paper investigates the accommodation method of Matteo Ricci S.J. in order to highlight the significance of this inappropriate decision. It first examines the missionary method of Matteo Ricci S.J. in its historical and theological dimensions and then reflects on and evaluates his achievements. His accommodation method was based on a theology of creation on the one hand and anthropology on the other, with a background of Ignatian spirituality. The prohibition decree amounted to a decision to disaffirm Ignatian spirituality in missionary activity. It closed the door to an open approach to missionary activity and affirmed a unilateral methodology.
