Abstract
Generally, a level of traffic accident exposure in rural roadway segments is relatively higher than that in urban roadway segments. It is because change of rural roadway alignment is more significant than that of urban roadway due to rural roadway characteristics such as existing and change of vertical curve, horizontal curve and other similar design elements. However, previous studies have mainly been focused on traffic accident prediction models in intersections rather than in roadway segments. Also, rate occuring accidents in roadway segment is very low, and it may make biased crash prediction models. Under these circumstances, a Zero Inflated Poisson (ZIP) model was used to develop a crash prediction model and accident modification factor (AMF) for rural multi-lane roadway segments in this study. In addition, the crash prediction model and AMFs of various influencing factors were used to develop safety indices which explain degree of effects of individual driving conditions and enable to assist decision making regarding safety improvement projects. It was found that exposure, radius, grade, a terrain type, a land use type, bus stop and delineators have statistically significant influence on ‘vehicle to vehicle crashes’ at rural multi-lane roadway segments. Also, the safety index of delineators was 108.34, and this describes installation of delineators can greatly reduce occurrence of the crashes. This study provided a guideline for decision making in safety improvement projects as a final product.
