Abstract

More than 50% of total crashes occurred on roadway segments, however, little research has conducted to identify primary factors that affect crashes occurred on roadway segments. The purpose of this study is to analyze the effects of various factors on fatal crashes for the roadway segments of rural roads. For the analysis, crash data were collected from the Traffic Accident Management System (TAMS) based on the rural roads of three provinces (Jeonnam, Gyeongbuk, and Gyeongnam) that Transportation Culture Index (TCI) is relatively low. For the identification of main factors affecting fatal crashes, a logistic regression model was developed with 15 independent variables consisting of drivers’ characteristics, environmental factors, and geometric characteristics, by using SAS software program. The results showed that a total of 10 variables were found to be statistically significant such as day or night indicator, gender, foggy condition, left and right curves, downgrade, less than 9m in roadway width, 13∼20m in roadway width, vehicular-pedestrian mixed roads, and drivers 65 years old and over. The crashes occurred at nighttime, on curve sections, downgrade sections and vehicular-pedestrian mixed roads are more likely to be severe than daytime, straight sections, level, and vehicular-pedestrian separated roads, respectively. In addition, male drivers are more likely to be involved in fatal crashes compared to female drivers. With respect to drivers’age, drivers aged over 65 are more likely to occur fatal crashes compared to drivers aged between 25 and 45.
