학교 공간 혁신에 대한 관심과 지원이 커지고 있는 현 시점에서, 학교 공간의 요소로서 자연환경의 가치와 시사점을 살펴볼 필요가 있다. 이에, 본 연구에서는 학교 자연환경의 개선 성공의 사례를 통해 가능성을 검토하고, 학교 자연환경으로서 나무와 학교숲의 효과를 고찰하며, 한국의 학교 공간 혁신 사업에서 자연환경이 얼마나 중요하게 반영되고 있는가를 밝히고 시사점을 제공하고자 한다. 첫째, 학교 공간의 자연환경이 실제로 학생들에게 어떤 영향을 미치는가를 사례로 확인하기 위해 미국의 이글 락 초등학교Eagle Rock Elementary School를 살펴보았다. 이 학교의 사례는 많지 않은 비용으로 나무에 초점을 둔 운동장 리모델링을 통해 학생들이 자연에 대한 아름다움을 깨닫게 되고, 사회성과 협동성이 발달되며, 자연스럽게 학습할 준비를 갖추게 되는 변화가 나타날 수 있음을 알려준다. 둘째, 학교 자연환경으로서 나무와 숲의 효과에 관한 국내외의 주요 연구 결과를 살펴보았다. 푸른 나무와 자연이 풍부한 환경을 갖춘 학교가 학생들의 학업성취도 향상에 긍정적인 영향을 미치고 학생들의 정서적·생태적 건강에도 긍정적인 영향을 미친다는 사실을 알 수 있다. 셋째, 한국의 각 시‧도 교육청에서 추진 중인 학교 공간 혁신 사업에서 자연환경을 얼마나 중요하게 반영하고 있는가를 살펴보았다. 대표적으로, 서울시교육청 및 부산시교육청의 학교 공간 혁신 사업을 중심으로 살펴보았으나 학교 공간의 요소로서 자연환경을 중요하게 반영하는 모습은 찾기 어려웠다. 주로 학교 건물 내부에서의 공간 혁신에만 초점을 두고 있다는 사실을 확인할 수 있다.
Abstract
This study aims to examine the possibility through the successful improvement of the school's natural environment, examine the effects of trees and school forests as the school's natural environment, and reveal how important the natural environment is in Korea's school space innovation project and provide implications. First, Eagle Rock Elementary School in the United States was analyzed to confirm how the school's natural environment actually affects students. The school's tree-focused playground remodeling at a low cost has led to a change in which students realize the beauty of nature, develop sociality and cooperation, and naturally prepare them to learn. Second, the results of major domestic and international studies on the effects of trees and forests as the school's natural environment were examined. It can be seen that schools with green trees and nature-rich environments have a positive effect on students' academic achievement and positively affect students' emotional and ecological health. Third, it was analyzed how important the natural environment is reflected in the school space innovation project promoted by each city and provincial office of education.
