Abstract
Clarifying his missiological characteristics, one might argue that these have been formed by a salvation-historical eschatology in connection with the Kingdom understanding inherited from the German Pietism. This rejects “the humanistic Utopianism” of hope setting up in this world. Consequently, mission as the means of proclaiming the Gospel does not primarily mean changing one’s socio-political understanding, but merely the redemption of God for the human being. Conversion is not related to a rethinking of ideology or politics, but to a turning back to God. For Beyerhaus, the original grounds and the final goal of “evangelization and mission” are not for mankind and his welfare, but only for the honour of God. It is necessary to investigate his theological methodology by considering his starting point. Beyerhaus’s missions concept is influenced by classical Pietism in Germany, which can be seen as a spiritual transformation of Lutheran reformation, crossing all borders die Umwandlung der Lutherischen Reformation. Another development of the Pietistic view of the Bible became influential for the later evangelical theology of mission. This was the salvation-hisorical approach of Johann A. Bengel and his school. This view is based on the fact that Warneck was the first to develop the science of mission as a systematic theological discipline. Beyerhaus points out that Karl Hartenstein was strongly influenced by Karl Barth’s theology and was one of the first missiologists to set forth the implications of Barth’s work for missions. Beyerhaus’s Kingdom-centred eschatology is seen by evangelicals to be the most pertinent aspect with regard to the motivation for understanding of Christian mission.
