Abstract
The statue of Kanum(觀音), which is the abbreviation of Kanseumbosal(觀世音菩薩, Avalokiteśvara), is inferred to be created in Gandara, India about 2nd CE and it has been built through Gupta dynasty to Pala Empire (8th CE). The notes on the belief of Kanum in India show up in the record on pilgrimage written by Faxian (the beginning of 5th CE) and Xuanzang (7th CE). According to the notes, that icon of Kanum settled down in the Gupta dynasty. The icon has the incarnate on the front of the head and grips lotus in the left hand. This image has stiffened as the icon of Indian Kanum. The most interesting thing on the belief of Indian Kanum is ‘Litany of Avalokiteśvara(觀音諸難救濟圖)’ in the latter Buddhist cave in west India created after Gupta dynasty. The iconography describes that Kanum bodhisattva redeems people who struggling against disasters. About 16 statues of Litany of Avalokiteśvara located in the west Indian area (e.g. Ajanta, Aurangabad, Kanheri, and Ellora caves) created about 8 CE, are known well. The common characteristic in these icons is that as the main feature, Kanum is in the center of the frame and four or five scenes of calamities are described on both sides. The iconography is based on the eight sufferings in the chapter of Bodhisattva Avalokiteśvara, Lotus Sūtra(Saddharma Puṇḍarīka Sūtra) and is related with Buddhist tantric sūtras. Besides, the description, especially, on the attack by elephants and lions would be expressing the specific disasters at that time. The paper, especially, figures out the following points. First, each iconography has a difference as the case of the carving time of the cave. Second, the iconography has been changed to Buddhist tantric arts, though being preferred by Mahāyāna Buddhists. Third, Tārā has replaced, at last, the role of Kanum after 8 CE. Finally, the tendency that eleven-headed Avalokiteśivara and four- or six-armed Avalokiteśivaras start to be built in post-Buddhist caves, is supported as the evidence of the beginning of Buddhist tantric arts.
