문화 핵심어 ‘팔자’와 운명관에 대한 민속 화용론적 연구

본 연구는 자연 의미적 메타언어의 방법론에 기대어 한국어의 ‘팔자’와 한국인의 운명관에 대한 민속 화용론적 접근을 시도한 것이다. 먼저 본 연구는 생애사의 자료를 통해 한 개인의 생애에서 경험된 사회적 재난이 개인적 재난으로 의미화된 사건들을 살펴보았다. 이 사건들은 개인적 재난의 관점에서 불가피하거나 어쩔 수 없는 것으로 수용되거나 체념될 때 ‘팔자’라는 한국어만의 특정 문화적인 언어적 단서와 관련되어 있다고 보았다. 요약하자면, 첫째, ‘팔자’란 한국어만의 문화 핵심어로서, 사회적 재난의 발생을 개인적인 것으로 수용하고 체념하는 탓의 심리적 기제가 ‘팔자’이다. 둘째, ‘팔자’는 ‘사주’라는 민속 철학적 요소와 관련된 부정적 삶의 조망 방식으로 과거성과 기회성을 갖는다. 셋째, 결정론적인 의미를 갖는 ‘운명’과 ‘숙명’을 비교했을 때, ‘운명’은 ‘팔자’와 달리 방향성을 암시하며 ‘숙명’은 ‘운명’보다 더 결정적이다. 한편 ‘팔자’의 부정적 의미에도 불구하고, 구술자들은 ‘팔자’에 대한 일반적 통념을 인식하지만 이에 굴복하지 않고 매우 적극적인 삶의 태도가 그들의 운명관을 형성하고 있음을 생애사를 통해 알 수 있었다. 이러한 논의를 바탕으로 본 연구는 ‘팔자’의 의미설명과 운명관의 문화 스크립트를 제시하였다.
Abstract
This study has tried to ethnopragmatic approach on Korean word “Palja” and the view of Korean destiny, resorting to Natural Semantic Metalanguage. First of all, this study examined accidents which turned into a personal disaster from the experienced social disaster, through the life story of each individual. This study considered these accidents can be related to Korean word ‘palja’, when they are accepted as unavoidable or out of control in view of the individual disaster. To summerize, first, ‘Palja’, as a Korean specific cultural key word, refers to the kind of psychological mechanism which accepts social disaster as individual one. Second, ‘Palja’ is a way of looking back one’s life as is related to the negative factor in ethnophilosophy. Third, when This study compare ‘Palja’ with ‘Unmyung’ or Sukmyung’, which has more deterministic meaning, ‘unmyung’, unlike ‘Palja’, implies direction, while ‘Sukmyung’ is more deterministic than ‘Unmyung’. Finally, This study found that interviewees’ very positive attitude toward their life made up their destiny, though they knew the general idea of Palja. Bases on this research, this study suggested explication of ‘Palja’ and cultural script of the view of destiny.
