Abstract

This study conceptualizes prepayment (seon-gyeolje) that emerged during the 2024 presidentialimpeachment protests in South Korea as a new form of political consumption and qualitativelyexplores how citizens perceived, motivated, and enacted this practice. Unlike conventionalpolitical consumption centered on consumers’ direct use of purchased goods, prepayment ischaracterized by a structural separation between payer and user, and by a value orientation inwhich emotional gratification and the realization of public good take precedence over immediatepersonal utility. In-depth semi-structured interviews were conducted with eight citizens who prepaid for foodor beverages at stores near the protest sites. Participants were recruited through purposiveand snowball sampling, and interviews were carried out both online and offline. Data wereanalyzed using thematic analysis, supported by participant validation and constant comparisonto ensure analytical rigor. Five key themes were identified: (1) political consumption motives rooted in national andpersonal crisis perceptions, (2) practices of consumption without direct use based on “payer–user” separation, (3) non-physical political participation through emotional and symbolicsolidarity, (4) reliance on familiar and trustworthy brands in selecting prepayment locations, and (5) fatigue and distrust toward traditional donation systems. These findings demonstrate that prepayment operates as an indirect and supportive mode ofpolitical consumption, extending beyond the boycott/buycott paradigm that assumes consumers’ direct use. Prepayment also enabled individuals restricted from physical protest participationto express political identity, experience emotional connectedness, and engage in collectivesolidarity through everyday consumption practices. Overall, this study expands the conceptual boundaries of political consumption by revealinghow prepayment facilitates non-physical solidarity, affective participation, and trust-basedcivic engagement. The results further suggest that the directness, visibility, and autonomyembedded in prepayment may offer an alternative and more reliable pathway for civic contributioncompared to conventional donation practices.
