Abstract
A desire to express political concerns often guides consumer behavior such as the buycotting or boycotting of products and services, yet such political consumerism has received limited attention from consumer researchers. Here, this study tries to understand who political consumers are in the first place by exploring factors affecting political consumer behavior. As the independent variable, this study used socio-demographic characteristics, political tendency (interest of socio- political issue, ideological disposition, post-materialist values), and general perception of Korean society(trust and fairness). Political consumer behavior is the dependent variable, answering yes or no in two questions, “have you boycotted products in the previous years based on political considerations?” and “have you buycotted products in the previous years based on political considerations?” The data came from 1076 consumers living in Seoul. Key findings of the study were (a) 27.7 percent of respondents are political consumers. Of those, 68.9 percent boycott, 6.4 percent buycott. and 24.7 percent both boycott, and buycott. (b) There are no difference in socio-demographic characteristics between political consumers and non-political consumers except education level and type of occupation. Instead, political consumers are different from non-political consumers in political tendency. Political consumers are more interested in current socio-political issue, more liberal, and more post-materialistic value oriented. Furthermore, political consumers less depend on Korean society than non-political consumers do. They also perceive Korean society's fairness lower than counterparts do. (c) political tendency(interest of socio-political issue, ideological disposition, post-materialist values), and general perception of Korean society(trust and fairness) have been shown to influence political consumer behavior. Varied implications based on the results of this study are discussed.
