초록

This case report describes the diagnosis, treatment methods, and follow-up management of mucoepidermoid carcinoma (MEC) occurring on the lower lip of a 28-year-old male patient. MEC in the lower lip is often misdiagnosed as a benign lesion, such as mucoceles, fibromas, or myxomas, and since it rarely occurs, there are few reported cases. Therefore, recognizing the clinical and histopathological characteristics is important to provide appropriate management. This clinical case was initially presumed to be a benign lesion based on the first clinical examination. However, further surgery was necessary after a low-grade MEC diagnosis was confirmed through histopathological analysis. The tumor exhibited low-grade histological features; however, partial rupture of the capsule was observed. Because it was diagnosed as a malignant tumor, additional resection was necessary to ensure complete removal with a safe margin. During the 18 months following the wide local excision surgery, no recurrence or lip deformities were observed. This case emphasizes the importance of accurate histopathologic diagnosis and complete surgical excision in the management of MEC in the lower lip, alongside a review of the relevant literature.
