Abstract
Purpose: Previous cross-sectional studies have shown that happiness and self-esteem are significantly correlated, yet little is known about the reciprocal relationships between happiness and self-esteem and grade latent mean difference of happiness and self-esteem in middle school students. Therefore, this study examined the reciprocal relationships between happiness and self-esteem and grade latent mean difference of happiness and self-esteem in middle school students. Design/methodology/data/approach: Mean and analysis of covariance structures (MACS) was conducted using AMOS 21, to examine the reciprocal relationships between grade mean differences of happiness and self-esteem in middle school students. The sample consisted of 2590 middle school students and the data of happiness and self-esteem came from the 1st to 3rd waves of the Korean Children and Youth Panel 2018 (KCYPS 2018). Findings/Results: The findings of this study showed the following. First, higher happiness predicted subsequent higher self-esteem. Second, higher self-esteem predicted subsequent higher happiness. Third, latent means of happiness of the second and third grade students were significantly lower than the first grade students. Fourth, latent means of self-esteem of the second and third graders were significantly lower than the first graders. Value: Results of this study suggest that happiness and self-esteem mutually reinforce each other over time.
