Abstract

This study examined the origins and meanings of ‘evil or negative beings’ observed in Northeast Asian myths from a viewpoint of comparative mythology. For this purpose, we answered questions raised from comparison of myth Geser transmitted orally in Buryat located to the southeast of Lake Baikal in Siberia with materials from Korea, Manchuria, Ainu, etc. Geser is one of heroic myths or heroic epics transmitted in Tibet, Mongol, Buryat, etc., and together with Jangar in Mongol and Manas in Kyrgyz, it represents well the mythological world of Northeast and Central Asia. In particular, Geser in Buryat has been reported to be similar to the Myth of Dangun in Gojoseon by previous research, and is considered a work that preserves the shamanistic world view of Northeast Asia. Through the comparative analysis, we found that ‘evil or negative beings’ observed in the myths were defined through the stages to recognize ‘nature’ anew (stage of recognizing the destructive power of nature objectively → stage of subjectivizing nature by metaphorizing it into evil or a negative being → stage of constructing a separate world with evil or negative beings), and they had a meaning as a means of laying a ground for explaining ‘humans’ or ‘the human world.’ Like humans cannot live with excluding the destructive power of nature, they cannot live with excluding the negative nature in them either. Accordingly, attempts to reflect the human nature recognized ‘evil or negative beings’ through ‘re-perception of nature.’ In this sense, it is the extreme expression of the recognition to describe ‘evil or negative beings’ as ‘humanistic beings’ who rule the land of a specific area like humans, live like humans, and think like humans.
