Abstract

This paper examines the process of identity suppression and recovery through an analysis of various family narratives in Demon Slayer. The so-called “family ideology” refers to the socially internalized and constructed notions of an ideal family-its structure, roles, and relationships-as recognized by a given community. In this sense, the conflict and confrontation between the Demon Slayer Corps and the demons in Demon Slayer can be understood within the discourse of family ideology. That is to say, the root of misfortune and conflict in the narrative lies in the incompetence or absence of the patriarchal father, domestic violence and abuse, and the breakdown of ethical family structures. In contrast, the healing of individual trauma and the reconstruction of the family are achieved through maternal protection or the bonds formed with surrogate family members-ultimately leading to a realization of justice. Accordingly, the demons in the story do not merely represent absolute evil that threatens social justice or corrupts human nature; rather, they symbolically embody a relative and mutable form of evil-those who destroy the household and endanger its members. From this perspective, Demon Slayer is less a traditional hero’s triumph over a monster than a family revenge narrative (katakiuchi), akin to that of a premodern ie (household) or a retainer avenging their master. Furthermore, the fact that the Demon Slayer Corps and the demons originate from the same bloodline-despite being on opposing sides-suggests an essential ontological similarity between good and evil.
