Abstract
This study aimed to reduce depression and improve the quality of life of elderly women living in aircraft noise-affected areas through group art therapy. Six elderly women were participated in, and a total of 15 sessions were conducted once a week for 90 minutes each. As research tools, depression and quality of life scales, along with PITR and K-HTP drawing tests were employed, and ses sion-by-session results were analyzed qualitatively. Data were analyzed using SPSS version 25.0 with the non-parametric Wilcoxon signed-rank test. The findings of this study are as follows: First, group art therapy was effective in reducing depression among elderly women in aircraft noise-affected areas. In the PITR drawing test, the amount of rain significantly decreased compared to the pretest, and the appropriately sized protective materials indicated an improvement in coping ability. Second, group art therapy was effective in improving the quality of life among elderly women in aircraft noise-impacted areas. In the K-HTP drawing test, the increased size of the human figure, and the de piction of a positive figure and a healthy tree indicated a recovery of a positive self-image. Third, in the qualitative analysis of each session, the group members formed a sense of empathy and increased mutual trust as they expressed the negative emotions caused by aircraft noise in the present form. Therefore, this study confirmed that group art therapy had a positive effect on reducing depression and improving the quality of life of elderly women living in aircraft noise-affected areas.
