Abstract

The shi (cosmic board) is a type of divination tool that embodies a model of the cosmic structure and imitates astronomical and calendrical calculations. Although two pieces of shi excavated in Pyongyang during the 1920s sparked early research on the subject, they have attracted little attention within the Korean academic community. In contrast, scholars in China and the West have made several attempts to synthesize and systematize excavated shi from the perspectives of the history of science, technology, and intellectual history. Against this backdrop, this paper confirms that an artifact previously reported by North Korea in the early 1990s as a “direction-observing instrument”—from Tomb No. 322 at Jeongbaek-dong in Pyongyang—is actually a third Nangnang shi. For the purpose of consolidating future research on the Nangnang shi, this study updates and comprehensively reviews discussions on shi that have taken place in overseas academia. It further classifies the fourteen known shi into three typological categories—Day Court Diagram (A), Nine-Palace (B), and South Pointer (C) types—and proposes a reconstruction of the newly identified Nangnang shi based on extant examples. The findings suggest that the tomb from which this newly identified Nangnang shi was excavated dates to the late first century BCE, and that the shi itself represents a relatively early form of the South Pointer type, making it the earliest among the extant Nangnang shi. Notably, it is the first known ancient shi to feature the Eight Trigrams (八卦), which grants it significant scholarly and historical value. Furthermore, with this discovery, the number of Nangnang shi excavated in Pyongyang has now in creased from two to three. Given that only around ten Han-dynasty shi are known to date, this constitutes a considerable proportion, pointing to the need for future research on their social significance.
