『성고(性故)』를 통해 본 방이지(方以智)의 인성론

방이지(方以智)는 명말청초의 사상가로 명말 왕학(王學) 말류가 갖고 있던 허무 사상의 폐단을 극복하고 주자(朱子) 말류의 폐단을 거울로 삼아 실(實)과 허(虛)를 아우르고자 하였다. 그는 인성론을 전개함에 있어서도 이와 같은 입장을 견지하였는데, 이런 사상은 그의 저작 『성고(性故)』에 담겨있다. 『성고』는 역사적으로 유행했던 유가 성설(性說)에 대한 설명과 그것들을 절충하는 데에 초점이 맞추어져 있다. 아울러 불가와 도가의 성설 또한 유가 성설과 모순되지 않는다는 것을 논증하고 있다. 방이지는 역사상 존재했던 각 학파의 성설이 서로 대립적인 것처럼 보이지만, 본질적으로는 그렇지 않다고 보았다. 방이지는 선악으로 성을 논하는 것에 반대했으며 인성에 대한 본질주의적 이해를 지양하고 “상인(相因)”의 관계로 본성의 선악을 다룸으로써 송명 유학자들의 성이원론(性二元論)을 극복하고자 하였다. 그의 성론은 심학(心學)의 굴레에서 벗어나 근대로 이행하는 과도기적 성격을 갖고 있음과 동시에 시대를 뛰어넘는 참신함도 보여주고 있다.
Abstract
Fang YI-Zhi is a thinker of the period between Ming and Qing dynasty. He tried to overcome the negative effect of YangMing study and ZhuXi's Philosophy. The same views is contained in his theory of human nature, especially his work “Xinggu” is a full-fledged work on theory of human nature. “Xinggu” focuses on the historically popular explanation of Confucianist doctrine of human natur and their compromise. In addition, it is argued that the human nature’ theory of Buddhism and Taoism does not contradict that of Confucianism. Fang YI-Zhi saw that although the theory of human natur of each school that existed in history seemed to be at odds with each other, it was essentially not. He opposed discussing nature with good and evil, avoiding an essentialist understanding of personality and dealing with nature's good and evil in relation to the “Relative Cause”. Through this, he tried to overcome the dualism of studying abroad in Song and Ming Confucianism. His theory of nature has a transitional nature of moving away from the yoke of Yang-ming's psychology and transition to modern times, while also showing timeless novelty.
