Abstract
This study examines the rhetoric of honor and shame in Paul’s moral teaching, focusing on 1 Thessalonians 4:1–8. Previous research on Pauline ethics has largely focused on the origins and background of Paul’s moral teaching—such as Hellenistic philosophy and Jewish law traditions—or on broader theological themes, yet the rhetorical function of honor and shame within Paul’s ethical discourse has not been sufficiently explored. To fill this gap, this study analyzes Paul’s moral exhortation through the lens of the rhetoric of honor and shame, with particular attention to the rhetorical concept of “the court of honor and shame.” By employing this concept as its analytical framework, the study investigates how Paul uses the rhetoric of honor and shame to shape and strengthen the moral identity and values of God’s covenant people. The analytical framework consists of four dimensions of the court of honor and shame— divine, internal, communal, and eschatological. For Paul, honor and shame are not merely matters of social reputation or external evaluation, but theological values redefined within the covenantal relationship before God. In the divine dimension, Paul emphasizes God’s will and Christ’s authority as the ultimate standards of moral judgment. In the internal dimension, he highlights the moral emotions and ethical orientation formed by the indwelling Spirit. In the communal dimension, Paul presents the church as God’s family in which holiness and honor must be embodied in relational life. Finally, in the eschatological dimension, he portrays Christ’s judgment as the ultimate manifestation of honor and shame within the covenantal community. Ultimately, this study demonstrates that Paul’s rhetoric of honor and shame serves to reinforce the moral identity and values of God’s covenant people, reinterpreting 1 Thessalonians 4:1–8 as a discourse of ethical formation within the covenantal community.
