본 논문은 바울 서신에 나타나는 “에끌레시아”(교회) 어휘의 의미와 역할을제시해 본다. 바울의 “에끌레시아” 사용에 관해 어원적 설명, 성경 신학적 설명, 문화-사회적 설명이 있었다. 각 설명은 나름대로의 적절한 설명과 근거를 제시했다. 하지만 어원적 설명은 개념적으로는 타당하지만, 실질적 근거를 제시하지 못했다. 성경 신학적 설명은 <<70인역>>에 등장하는 예들을 통해 바울의 “에끌레시아”의 의의를 드러내 주기를 했지만, 바울이 왜 그 어휘를 선택했는지에 관해 의미나 역할을 적절히 제시하지 못했다. 문화-사회적 설명은 바울 “에끌레시아”의 기능을 설명하기 위한 제안을 시도했으나, 너무 문화-사회적인 측면이 강조되어 바울이 세운 “에끌레시아”의 정체성, 기능및 양상이 무엇인지를 충분히 설명하지 못했다. 이에 필자는 “에끌레시아”에 관해 살펴보고, 이를 데살로니가전서의 서두에 등장하는 “‘에끌레시아’+시(市) 구성원의 속격형” 구문(th|/ evkklhsi,a| Qessalonike,wn)에 대입하여 해석하도록 시도했다. 그리고 그 내용을 데살로니가전서의 메시지와 비교하여 그 의미와 역할을 드러내도록 시도했다. 이를 통해 필자는 바울의 “에끌레시아”는하나님의 구속 복음을 패역한 세상에 전하는 사명을 받은 “에끌레시아”로서의 의미와 역할을 가지고 있다고 제안했다.
Abstract
In this paper I try to present the meaning and role of the word ekklesia(church) in Paul’s letters. There have been some attempts to explain the usage of Paul’s ekklesia, such as an etymological explanation, a biblical theological explanation, and a cultural-social explanation. Each explanation provided appropriate explanations and evidence for it. However, the etymological explanation, although conceptually sound, failed to provide any substantive basis. The biblical theological explanation revealed the meaning of Paul’s ekklesia in the basis of examples of ekklesia o f the LXX, but failed to properly present the meaning or role of why Paul chose that word. The cultural-social explanation attempted to explain the function of Paul’s ekklesia, but too much emphasis was placed on the cultural-social aspect and did not sufficiently explain what Paul’s ekklesia actually was in terms of the identity, function and aspect. Accordingly, I tried to look at the meaning and usage of the word ekklesia, and explained i ts u sage considering the phrase “ekklesia+genitive form of city member”(th|/ evkklhsi,a| Qessalonike,wn) that appears at the beginning of 1 Thessalonians. Through this analysis I suggested that Paul’s ekklesia has the meaning and role of an ekklesia who received the mission to spread the gospel of God’s redemption to a rebellious world.
