Abstract

This study aimed to examine the effects of a cooking activity intervention using an artificial intelligence (AI) voice assistant on improving and maintaining the cooking performance of students with developmental disabilities.A single-subject research design employing a multiple-probe design across participants was implemented. Three students with developmental disabilities enrolled in a special class at a middle school participated in the study. The cooking activities consisted of a set of 25 cooking tasks with controlled levels of difficulty and procedural complexity, which were designed to provide variety while maintaining equivalent task demands across sessions. The researcher-developed Cooking Performance Assessment Tool (17 items, CVR=.82) was used to measure the percentage of correct performance across the baseline, intervention, and maintenance phases. All participants demonstrated more than a 40-percentage-point increase in average performance during the intervention phase compared to the baseline (PND=100%), and their performance levels were maintained at an average of 89-90% two weeks after the intervention. The social validity assessment also indicated a high level of satisfaction with the goals, procedures, and outcomes of the intervention (M=4.7/5). The cooking activity intervention using an AI voice assistant was found to be an effective instructional strategy for enhancing and maintaining the cooking performance skills of students with developmental disabilities. This study provides practical implications for designing technology-based individualized instructional systems in special classes. Future research should include qualitative studies that explore the long-term maintenance effects and examine students’ experiences in depth.
