Climate Characteristics of Dokdo over the Recent 13 Years (2010-2022) (1): Analysis of Monthly and Seasonal Temperature and Precipitation using Climographs

Despite the importance of Dokdo as a Korean territory, its climate remained unknown until the late 2000s due to the lack of reliable meteorological measurements. For this reason, the climate of Ulleungdo, the closest island to Dokdo, was used as an alternative to represent Dokdo’s Climate due to its geographic proximity. However, recent studies based on four to five years of meteorological data measured in Dokdo found that the climate of Dokdo is different from that of Ulleungdo. Therefore, our overarching goal was to examine the climate characteristics of Dokdo, focusing on temperature and precipitation with the 13-year-long dataset from 2010 to 2022. For this, we investigated monthly and seasonal characteristics in temperature and precipitation using climographs. The findings exhibit that Dokdo has maritime climate features, with a monthly mean temperature range of 3.9°C in the coldest month (January) to 25.2°C in the warmest month (August). We also observed relatively-evenly-distributed precipitation patterns across months compared to adjacent areas such as Gangneung and Pohang on the east coast of the Korean Peninsula and Ulleungdo in the East Sea. We believe this study would contribute to correcting the misinformation about the climate in Dokdo that is widely used in educational institutions and governments.
