Abstract
This study conceptualizes women’s bodies as sites of trans-corporeality and analyzes the life histories of women with experiences of drug use, exploring how their bodies and bodily trajectories are formed through these entanglements. The analysis shows that experiences of gender-based violence and the burdens of repeated sexual and labor exploitation shaped bodily trajectories marked by heterosexual partnerships sought to ease loneliness and boredom, the pursuit of immediate stimulation, and habituation to tension and arousal. As these bodies were situated within nightlife and medical industries—through casual sex, parties, pharmaceuticals, and emergency rooms—drugs generated new forms of pleasure, enabling more active sexual encounters and reconfiguring women’s positions, for instance from daughters into subjects of attention. At the same time, drugs traversing male-centered drug economies and sexual discourses also produced addiction, coercive sex, victimization, and sexual shame. Through the repetition of these tensions, transformations in bodily trajectories emerged that sought to exit exploitative heterosexual relations.
