Abstract
There is no fundamental difference between the objectives of digital curation and those of digital archiving. There are, however, differences between the digital curation communities and the archiving communities. The former focus on data, the latter on recordkeeping contexts. Archives are unique because of their provenance, but they are constructs. So are memories, identities and communities, which are imagined, constructed, maintained and transferred within social frameworks. Constructing the archive happens through appraisal, arrangement, description, providing access and reference service, preservation and digitization. Each of these practices of mediation by the archivist or digital curator is discussed, as a contribution to understanding the constructed archive and the agency of the archivist or digital curator.
