기록관은 과거의 기록들을 보존하는 장소일 뿐만 아니라 과거가 구성되고 만들어지는 장소이기도 한다. 이런 구조는 사회적, 정치적, 문화적 관심에 종속되어 있을 뿐 아니라 본질적으로 현재의 지배적인 의사소통매체와도 연관을 맺는다. 우리에게 주어진 기록의 맥락을 안전하게 보호하고 미래에 전달하려는 노력으로 원질서 원칙과 출처 존중의 원칙에 따라 기록을 정리하고 기술한다. 이 기록 기술(archival description)이란 무엇보다도 기록의 진본성을 재현하는 방법으로, 기록물의 설명을 통해 전체 맥락 안에 위치시키고 내용에 대한 단서를 제공하는 역할을 하는 것이다. 그러나 정리와 기술이 아키비스트의 가장 고유한 역할이지만, 그리고 정리와 기술을 통한 아키비스트의 기록 원형에 대한 중재가 아무리 원질서 존중의 원칙과 출처의 원칙이 엄격히 지켜지고 고수된다 하더라도, 기록 전반의 단계를 통해 미치는 아키비스트의 영향을 막을 수는 없다. 객관적이고 중립적인 보관자로 정의된 아키비스트들이 평가 선별하는 기록물에 대해, 생산하는 검색도구에 대해, 그리고 기록의 공정하고 정확한 재현으로서 기록 기술(archival description)을 보는 여전히 변치 않는 관점에 대하여 되짚어 보고, 고도의 기술 환경 속에서 아키비스트의 일방적인 정보 전달, 그리고 아카이브즈의 국가 중심적이고 단정적인 구조에 대한 재고와 새로운 방향성을 모색하는 것에 이 논문의 의의가 있다.
Abstract
This paper considers the relationship between memory and archives by exploring the concepts and meaning of archivist and archival description. The author considers the metaphor of archives as memory and relates our understanding of creation, arrangement, preservation, description, and use of records and archives. The author argues that archivists demonstrate their knowledge and background when they organizing and preserving records and archives.
