This paper measured and examined the characteristics of durations of short vowels and long vowels in Nanai, in which vowel length has a dis- tinctive function, more than one long vowel may appear in a word. To summarize the discussion in this paper is as follows: First, [+ RTR] vowels such as [a], [ɪ] have a longer duration than [ə], [i] of [-RTR] vowels. In addition, the low vowel [a] has the longest dura- tion and the high vowel [i] has the shortest duration. Secondly, durations of short vowels are the longest in the second sylla- ble and the shortest in the first syllable. Those of long vowels, except for [u:], is longer in the first syllable than in the second syllable. Thirdly, ratio of long and short vowels differs according to the syllable positions. The average duration of long vowels in the first syllable is at least 54% longer than the short vowels, and the average duration of long vowels in the second syllable is 23% longer. On the other hand, in the third syllable, the ratio of long vowels to short vowels is almost equal, or rather, is smaller than short vowels.
