초록

This study examines different factors conditioning variation in the quantity of syllable nuclei. Specifically, various tones and prevocalic consonants are observed as conditioning factors in quantity variation. The trade-off relationship between preceding consonant release duration or VOT and following vowel duration is discussed in relation to intrinsic, perturbed, and phrasal pitch variations. Results show that vowel duration is greatly affected by the VOTs of preceding consonants and partially related to the pitch. Differences in intrinsic pitch and duration for individual vowels are found across speakers in diverse contexts with an overall inverse correlation. The intrinsic pitch difference, however, becomes neutralized in certain contexts though the different intrinsic durations are maintained, which suggests the correlation is not direct nor causal. The interrelation between overall F0s or phrasal tones and vowel duration is not found systematic. Current findings suggest the quantitative trading-off between consonantal duration and vocalic duration is the major interaction, and the tones are not a significant factor inducing durational variation in syllable nuclei in Korean.
