Abstract
Today, migration and refugee issues are very diverse. The issue of migration and refugees in Tunisia, which is the subject of this paper, is common to the country, to Mediterranean and European countries, and to the Saharan Africans who are migrants and refugees. It is also important to note that the issue of migration and refugees does not boil down to a single event or phenomenon, but rather is intricately intertwined with multiple phenomena. Therefore, in order to look specifically at the issue of migration and refugees in Tunisia, this paper focuses on the political, economic, and social situation in Tunisia since the Arab Spring. In particular, it looks at the situation in Tunisia prior to the election of Kais Saïed, the situation since his election in 2019, and the current situation, noting that Tunisia is undergoing a process of democratic regression through the birth and content of an authoritarian regime and, most recently, the collusion with nationalism. The victims of this process are the people of Saharan Africa. They have been turned into an object of hatred in Tunisia by the policies of President Kais Saïed, and racist elements have emerged in Tunisian society in the same way as in Europe. Given that this study focuses on Francophone Africa, future comparisons with migrants and refugees in English-speaking African countries will help to continue the research and to identify the identity of Africans accessing the Mediterranean. We will also compare similar cases with the situation in Algeria and Morocco to gain a more holistic understanding of the region.
