Abstract

This study examines the narrative position of the lower classes— particularly slaves and maids—within family narratives as depicted in newly written novels (sinjak-gusoseol) and new novels(sinsosŏl) of the 1910s. The instability of the status system in the late Joseon dynasty and the abolition of slavery following the Gabo Reform stimulated an imagination that redefined slaves, no longer as beings merely subordinated to the master’s household, but as independent figures with families of their own. Accordingly, slaves emerge as liminal figures who traverse between the master’s family and their own natal families, sometimes functioning as agents safeguarding the survival of the master’s household, and at other times as strategic actors pursuing their own desires. Focusing on Chaebonggambyeolgok, Gang sang-wol, Bongseonhwa, and Ujung haengin, this paper analyzes how lower-class characters extend beyond the conventional roles of performing loyalty and filial piety to occupy new narrative positions in the reconfigured relations with the upper class. This analysis reveals how family narratives were transformed after the dismantling of the status system and how the lower classes acquired new identities as boundary figures within the family. Furthermore, the narrative configurations of the 1910s are shown to closely reflect the broader social changes of the Enlightenment period, offering important insights into the new status and cultural significance of family narratives in modern Korean literature.
