Abstract

A short summary of researches examing the effects of the neurohypophyseal peptides on learning and memory is provided. Vasopressin(VP)-like peptides appear to improve the memory tasks of normal rats. In various conditions of VP deficiency, for example neurohypophysectomy, hereditary defects in the production of VP, and VP antiserum treatment, rats have an impaired performance on memory tasks. This deficit could be restored by treatment with VP. On contrary, oxytocin(OT) has intrinsic behavioral activity of an opposite nature. Although the interpretation of the data was not uniform, it was generally recognized that VP and OT affected cognitive behavior. However, the mechanism of action by which neurohypophyseal peptides exerted long-term effects on behavior was not understood. Moreover clinical applications of these peptides have been not fully successful. Involvement of other neurotransmitter systems and the sexual difference in the actions of these peptides on memory are discussed.
