Abstract
Modern religious culture continues to be confined within the framework in which ‘mythological notions’ and ‘notions of absolute value’—both of which emerged and developed during what some refer to as the ‘Axial Age’ (from 900 BCE to 200 BCE)—coexist. This study examines the development of religious culture during the Eastern ‘Axial Age,’ from ancient China to Confucius, by categorizing it into a three-stage conceptual framework and analyzing the characteristics of each stage. In Stage 1 of religious culture, the dominant idea is the ‘mythological notion’ that “the deity directly governs secular affairs.” In Stage 2, the notion is that “the deity indirectly governs secular affairs,” in which both ‘mythological notions’ and ‘notions of absolute value’ coexist. Finally, Stage 3 reflects the thought of Confucius: “the deity is unrelated to secular affairs.” At this stage, all ‘mythological notions’ are removed, and only the ‘notion of absolute value’ remains. In summary, the development of human religious culture follows the trajectory of ‘mythological notions → mythological notions + absolute value notions → absolute value notions.’ Although modern religious culture has entered Stage 3 and is striving to eliminate residual ‘mythological notions’—such as petitioning deities for blessings or protection, a remnant of primitive religion (Stage 1)—concepts like the afterlife and postmortem salvation remain firmly entrenched as doctrinal tenets. However, the advancement of scientific culture—such as Neuralink’s Brain-Computer Interface (BCI) and the development of mind uploading—suggests that the time has come for religious culture to part ways with these final mythological notions, including afterlife beliefs and postmortem salvation. Accordingly, this study proposes the elimination of all mythological notions in religious culture, especially concepts of the afterlife and postmortem existence.
