초록
This study examined the effects of health news coverage on public perception during pandemic disease situations. The results identified the severity frame as one of the most commonly used frames in the news coverage of pandemic diseases in the United States. This study, however, proposes that the media audience may not consider pandemic disease as a serious health issue as much as the media emphasizes its susceptibility and severity. Optimistic bias may be one of the reasons for this gap between the significance of media coverage and the public’s perceived risk of contracting the disease.
Abstract
This study examined the effects of health news coverage on public perception during pandemic disease situations. The results identified the severity frame as one of the most commonly used frames in the news coverage of pandemic diseases in the United States. This study, however, proposes that the media audience may not consider pandemic disease as a serious health issue as much as the media emphasizes its susceptibility and severity. Optimistic bias may be one of the reasons for this gap between the significance of media coverage and the public’s perceived risk of contracting the disease.
