Abstract

This study, aimed at determining the reliability and validity of the timed up-and-go (TUG) test for children with cerebral palsy, has the potential to significantly revolutionize the evaluation of functional mobility in these children. Our analysis aims to establish the TUG test as a reliable scale for evaluating the functional mobility of children with cerebral palsy, providing valuable evidence for its usability. 19 children with cerebral palsy who are at Levels 1 and 2 of the Gross Motor Function Classification System (GMFCS) paricipated in this study. Tester 1 and Tester 2 evaluated to functional mobility using the TUG test and items of the standing (D) and walking/running/jumping (E) sections of the gross motor function measurements (GMFM). We analyzed the intra- and inter-tester correlation coefficients for reliability analysis. Pearson correlation was performed to determine concurrent validity between the TUG test and the gross motor function measurements. The inter- and intra-tester reliability of the TUG test and the items of the gross motor function measurements were remarkably high. The correlation between the TUG test and the items of the gross motor function measurements demonstrates very significant correlation (p < 0.05) that reinforces the relationship between the two tools. The reliability and validity of the TUG test and the items of the standing (D) and walking/running/jumping (E) sections of the gross motor function measurements were found to be exceptionally high. This robustness in our findings instills confidence in the possibility of assessing the functional mobility of children with cerebral palsy using the TUG Test.
